3 Reasons You May Need Professional Duct Cleaning Today

Duct cleaning can be a controversial issue. Some people swear by it, while others say it’s not necessary. Though there’s anecdotal evidence that periodic professional duct cleaning can improve your indoor air quality and HVAC efficiency, the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) has found no scientific evidence that it does any good. However, there are certain circumstances in which having your ducts professionally cleaned is good and necessary.

When Is Duct Cleaning Necessary?

  • Mold growth – Mold in your ductwork can be hard to see and even harder for you to remove. Mold in your ductwork will end up in your indoor air as air blows through the system. If your HVAC technician tells you they’ve found mold, ask to see it for yourself. Your technician should be able to identify the type of mold and its effects. If the insulation around your ductwork is moldy, it can’t be cleaned and will need to be replaced entirely.
  • Infestations – If your ducts have rodents, insects, or other animals living inside them, schedule a professional duct cleaning immediately. Of course, you want the animals removed, but their sheddings or waste can also ruin your indoor air quality.
  • Clogs – Regularly cleaning ordinary dirt from your ducts has never been conclusively proven to reduce or prevent the occurrence of certain health-related problems. However, if your ducts are clogged to the point where contaminants are being blown into your home through supply registers, consider having the ductwork cleaned. That dirt and debris will directly affect the air you and your family breathe.

If you do have your ducts cleaned, make sure it’s done properly or it can make the problem worse. Poorly cleaned ducts can release more contaminants into the air, or even cause damage to the ducts. Contact your qualified HVAC professional and can talk it over with them to determine if duct cleaning is right for you.
