Proper Landscaping Around The A/C Unit Keeps It Running Smoothly

Homeowners are always looking for new ways to ensure their HVAC systems run efficiently and last longer. It may surprise you to learn that one way to do that is to follow some basic rules for landscaping around the A/C unit.

Your air conditioner is most likely a split system model, which means the air handler and evaporator coil are inside and an outdoor component houses the condenser and compressor. Successful landscaping around the A/C unit means paying attention to several factors.

Provide or Take Advantage of Shade

If you have the opportunity, locate the condenser/compressor in a place where it will be shaded at least part of the day, but avoid planting trees that are likely to drop limbs close by. Cooler A/Cs work more efficiently.

Plant deciduous trees that provide cooling and shading to the home on the south and west sides. The trees will drop their leaves in fall so you can get sunlight.

Keep an Eye on Airflow

Keep obstructions away from the outdoor unit so it doesn’t impede airflow. Also, keep plants away from the access panel — at least two feet away from the unit.

Don’t allow an area of loose sand or dirt to form around the unit. Dirt or sand will blow inside and cause a malfunction. If there are bare areas, plant grass.

Don’t build any structures over the outdoor unit, such as decks or porches, and keep all weeds and debris away from the equipment.

Other Landscaping Tips

Plant a hedge around the unit to improve curb appeal, but be sure to maintain regular upkeep to avoid obstructions.

Perform regular cleanup of leaves, weeds, limbs and other debris as part of seasonal maintenance.
