It’s Time to Clean and Prep Your HVAC System for Spring

With winter transitioning to spring in Arlington Heights, it’s time to start thinking about preparing your HVAC system for the changing seasons. After your HVAC or heat pump’s cooling mode has been dormant for several months following a summer of hard use, it likely needs some TLC in the form of spring maintenance. Following are some tips for preparing your HVAC system for the spring, with some things you can do, as well as others best left to a trained technician.

DIY Maintenance Steps

  • You’ll want to check the HVAC or heat pump air filter first. On the HVAC, this is likely the filter used in the furnace blower if it does double duty. It’s always good to start a new season with a fresh filter, both for energy efficiency and performance both short-term and long-term. Indoor air quality is also enhanced by a clean filter.
  • Clear any drapes, rugs or furniture away from vents and registers. This is a good thing to check in all seasons.
  • If you covered your HVAC’s outside unit during the winter, uncover it and clean the outside. Clear away any leaves, weeds, sticks or other debris away from the outside unit.

Professional HVAC System Maintenance

While you may be able to take care of some of these steps yourself, it probably makes the most sense to let a professional technician handle these tasks, since he’ll be performing maintenance anyway.

  • Clean the indoor and outdoor coils of your HVAC or heat pump. Over time, dirt and debris can coat the coils on the outside condensing coil and the inside evaporator coil. A clean coil is better able to handle the vital heat exchange process that occurs in the coil.
  • Check and adjust airflow. Every forced-air HVAC system is designed for a specific amount of airflow.
  • Check the refrigerant level and if it’s low, inspect for a possible leak.
  • Lubricate and clean parts, and check all electrical connections.
